FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Where are these books from?
These books were donated by DISCOVERBOOKS.COM which is a nation wide retailer of used books. They donate any books which are excess to their needs to “The Book Project” who sorts the books and makes them available to schools.

How much will they cost me?
There are no costs or fees of any kind for these books.

How many can I request?
Request all that you need. Try not to be wasteful, but take all you can use.

What types of books are available?

  • Board books for pre-school ages 2-4
  • Golden Books for kindergarten
  • Picture books (grades 1-3)
  • K-2 (paper copies of books like Berenstain Bears or Clifford for grades K-2)
  • Graded Step Level Readers (such as the Splat the Cat). These are also called “Easy Readers” for grades 1-3
  • Elementary Chapter books (such as Flat Stanley, Magic Treehouse, Captain Underpants, Beverly Cleary, Diary of a Wimpy Kid) for grades 3-6
  • Elementary Non-Fiction (science and nature, etc.) – all grades
  • Middle School
  • High school
  • Foreign language.

How are books packed?
The Book Project packs your books in one of three different sizes of boxes.
  • Large boxes are either banker boxes (2160 cubic inches) or copy paper boxes (1967 cubic inches). They typically weigh 25 to 30 pounds when full. We use these boxes for elementary chapter books and elementary non-fiction. Books vary in size. A large box typically contains between 100 and 120 chapter books.
  • Medium boxes are wine boxes (sizes range from 1300 to 1700 cubic inches) from the grocery. They are about 2/3 the size of large boxes. They are primarily used for picture books and foreign language books.
  • Small boxes are half the size of wine boxes and are used for all other types of books.

How can I use the books?
You can use them in any way that supports the role of the school typical uses are:
  • Giving books to students so they can create private libraries at home.
  • Use books to add to the school library.
  • Using books for classroom discussions.
  • Creating reading groups or clubs.
  • As prizes at school events.
  • As auction items for school fund raisers.

Are there special issues with foreign language books?
We receive books in about 70 languages. We are not able to translate the books to verify that they have appropriate content. Most schools which request foreign language books establish committees of parents to review content.

For languages that do not use the English writing system, we cannot always distinguish the languages. For example, Arabic and Farsi look very similar, as do Russian and Ukrainian or Hindi and Nepali. Therefore, if you request a box of Arabic books, it might contain Farsi books mixed in by accident. Fixing this is simply beyond our skill set.

Questions?
If you have additional questions, please ask your school administrator

Our Process:

Step#1: The Book Project takes inventory of the available boxes of books.

Step#2: The Book Project and the school district agree on dates to begin and end requesting books.

Step#3: The school district administrator notifies anyone who might be interested in the school district that there is an open period to submit requests using the web site. The administrator provides the web site password to interested teachers/ librarians/ principals.

Step#4: At the end of the request period (typically two weeks), the school district administrator produces a report of requested boxes.

Step#5: The Book Project changes the password of the web site so no further changes to requests will be made.

Step#6: The school district administrator sends a truck to Seattle to pick up books and take them to an area in your district where teachers can claim them.

Step#7: The school district administrator creates a report for each teacher/librarian to inform them how many boxes of each type of box to collect.

Step#8: Teachers or librarians pickup their books.

Step#9: The Book Project removes all dispersed boxes from the database. They are now ready to begin again for another school district.
